What Is the Labouchere Betting System?
The Labouchere betting system is a type of betting method used in roulette. It is designed to help you have more fun and control your session more effectively. There are many similar betting systems such as:
- James Bond, and more.
Even though it’s not the most popular one, Labouchere is still widely used, especially by experienced roulette players.
The system was developed by Henry Labouchere (1831–1912), an avid roulette player. He created this specific method that focuses on even bets, meaning you can only use it on red/black, odd/even, and high/low bets. However, the system can also be used in many other situations in which even money wagers are allowed.
How to Use the Labouchere Roulette Betting System
The first thing you need to do is come up with a sequence of numbers before starting your session. This can be any system, but you’ll need to think about it quickly.
To show you how this system will work, we’ll start with the simplest sequence available: 1, 2, and 3.
The potential profit you aim to achieve is equal to the sum of all numbers in the sequence, meaning you’ll be aiming for the profit of $6 in this case (1+2+3).
Whenever it’s time to place a wager, the stake should equal the sum of the first and the last numbers in the sequence. In our case, the stake should be $4 ($1+$3). If you make a winning bet, you need to cross these numbers out, meaning only 2 will remain in your sequence. However, if you lose your bet, you must add one more number to the sequence. Therefore, after a lost bet, your sequence should look like this: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
In short, when you win, you cross the first and last numbers. You lose, and you add one number to the sequence.
The only situation when you need to do something different is when there’s just one number left. In that case, you only need to stake the amount suggested by that number. In our scenario, that’s $2. If you win the bet, the cycle is over, and you can start over with another sequence or simply end your session.
Possible Variations of the System
The thing with Labouchere is that bets can get high really fast if you lose a couple of wagers in a row. For instance, after 20+ rounds, your sequence may look something like this: 25 + 28 + 29 + 27 + 56 + 89 + 106. The total is 360 in this case, and it might be too much for you to make a wager that includes the sum of the first and last number. In that case, some people suggest splitting this into two or more sequences, with their sum equal to the sum of the original sequence.
For example, you can now make the three following sequences.
- Sequence A: 10 + 15 + 20 + 25 + 30 + 35 + 40 + 42 + 43 = 260
- Sequence B: 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 50
- Sequence C: 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 50
As you can see, when all three are summed up, we get 360 — the amount from the sum in the original sequence. In this case, you need to start with sequence A and continue until you’ve crossed out all the numbers. After that, you can begin with sequences B and C.
Another popular variation is called negative Labouchere. In this case, you need to add numbers to the sequence when you win and cross them out when you lose. This option is far less popular compared to the original Labouchere strategy.
Advantages of the Labouchere Betting System
Here are some of the main perks of using the Labouchere betting method:
Betting on roulette is more fun this way — Whenever you add a betting system to your roulette strategy, it becomes more entertaining to play. Labouchere is complex but worth it, as it’s one of the most exciting betting systems out there.
You actually get to finish a cycle — Players often get carried away when playing roulette and don’t really know when to stop. By making a cycle and crossing out all numbers, you can get a sense of accomplishment, after which you can stop playing.
You’ll have better control of your spending— Once you start crossing out the numbers, you’ll have a great overview of your wins and losses.
It’s incredibly flexible — You can make up your own sequence and adjust your betting to it.
