Proposed Las Vegas Sands Nassau-County Long Island CasinoSummary

  • Hofstra University says Nassau Hub is an inappropriate location for a casino.
  • Area is surrounded by educational institutions and suburban communities.
  • College feels a casino would have a negative impact on the area.

The fight for licensing of casinos in New York City is in full swing, and certain plans for a gambling venue are coming under fire.

Las Vegas Sands is a major gambling company that would like to create a casino in the Nassau Coliseum site, offering a casino venue, hotel, and event space. The local Hofstra University does not like the idea and has written a letter in opposition.

Not An Ideal Location for a Casino

Hofstra University is not keen on the idea of a casino coming to the area. The University is the latest to come out against the Sands plans to create a casino at the Coliseum. In the letter, Hofstra states that the Nassau Hub is not an appropriate location for a casino.

The area is surrounded by preschools, primary schools, graduate school, and suburban communities. The University feels that a casino would cause an uptick in crime, traffic congestion, and economic harm to local businesses.

Hofstra pointed out that there are other locations in and near New York City that would work for a casino site. Additional locations would offer a spot for a casino that is not located near educational institutions that are prevalent with young people.

The Garden City Village Board is also against the proposal. The board does not have any power to veto the plans but has taken an official stance against Las Vegas Sands. Members of the community feel that this stance sends a message to regulators that a casino does not belong in the area. The Nostrand Gardens Civic Association is also opposed.

Nassau Community College is on Board

While there are those who are opposed to the idea, others are in favor. The Nassau Community College agrees with the plan and has signed a partnership to act as a primary employee training center for the casino is the plans are approved.

Along with a training center, the college would offer internships and experiential learning opportunities for students of the college that want to have a career at the casino in the future. Dr. Maria Conzatti, the Nassau Community College acting president, stated that the creation of a new industry will bring thousands of jobs and is a ‘tremendous opportunity’ for the students and diverse populations that the community college serves.

The curriculum would be enhanced with the partnership, offering training programs, mentoring, and internship options. Adult students can enjoy career opportunities and begin a successful career path with the venue.
