The legislation is currently heading to Governor <strong>Abigail Spanberger<\/strong>, who has yet to say whether she will sign it, veto it, or make changes.<\/p>\n<p>Back in December, the <strong>Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 5-4 to oppose casino legislation<\/strong>. Despite that, state lawmakers, including some representing parts of the county, chose to move ahead anyway.<\/p>\n<p>That decision has frustrated several local leaders. \u201c<em>It\u2019s really sad that the people of Fairfax County were sold out by their own<\/em>\u201d <strong>Supervisor James Bierman Jr.<\/strong> said during a recent board meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Board Chairman <strong>Jeffrey C. McKay<\/strong> also questioned how the bill gained enough support to pass. He pointed out that <strong>many of the votes came from lawmakers outside Fairfax County<\/strong>, even though several local representatives were against it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u5KtFlN1-GI?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"we-have-been-on-defense\">\u201cWe Have Been on Defense\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Supporters of the plan argue that a casino could bring in significant revenue, especially money that currently goes to nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/states\/maryland\">Maryland<\/a>, including MGM National Harbor. But critics say the potential downsides have not been fully addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor <strong>Dalia Palchik<\/strong>, who represents the Tysons area, said the county never asked for a casino in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The bill passed still does not make sense for our community\u2026 We have been on defense<\/em>\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone on the board is against the idea. Supervisor <strong>Pat Herrity<\/strong> said that while he has moral concerns about gambling, it is already widely accessible through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/games\/roulette\/apps\">mobile apps<\/a> and online platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the governor signs the bill, the project is far from certain. County leaders would still need to approve putting the issue on a public ballot. That gives them another opportunity to slow or stop the process.<\/p>\n<p>There are also practical concerns. Officials have raised questions about traffic, public safety, property values, and whether enough resources would be available to deal with gambling addiction.<\/p>\n<p>A late amendment has added another layer of controversy, possibly allowing a \u201c<em>temporary<\/em>\u201d casino to operate for five years, a move local leaders strongly criticized as rushed and lacking transparency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summary: Virginia lawmakers approve plan for a voter referendum on a Tysons casino.
