SL Green Realty\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/times-square-casino-plan-faces-key-vote-amid-broadway-backlash\">proposed $5.4 billion Times Square casino<\/a> and Silverstein Properties\u2019 $7 billion mixed-use development near the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center were both rejected by local community advisory committees on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>Each committee, composed of six members appointed by elected officials, <strong>voted 4-2 against the respective projects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to gaming regulations in the state, bids require a two-thirds majority from a community advisory committee to move forward to the Gaming Facility Location Board. The <strong>final licensing decision is expected by December 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad Maione<\/strong>, spokesperson for the New York State Gaming Commission, emphasized the significance of the vote, telling CoStar News, \u201c<em>The community advisory committee decisions are binding<\/em>\u201d. Votes for the remaining Manhattan contenders are scheduled to be completed by Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZDTbcJfwTro?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"disappointment-among-supporters\">Disappointment Among Supporters<\/h2>\n<p>SL Green, alongside partners Caesars Entertainment and Jay-Z\u2019s Roc Nation, were quick to express disappointment on their \u201c<em>visionary proposal<\/em>\u201d being rejected. SL Green CEO <strong>Marc Holliday<\/strong> was more blunt with his criticism, with Crain\u2019s New York quoting him on calling the committee\u2019s decision regarding 1515 Broadway \u201c<em>a despicable display of cowardice<\/em>\u201d that ignored the community benefits the project promised. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The only ones with the courage to stand up [are] the governor\u2019s and the mayor\u2019s appointees, and everybody else runs and hides. Go run and hide.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Silverstein\u2019s Avenir project faced a similar fate, despite a last-minute appeal to postpone its vote after receiving \u201c<em>a very significant additional request<\/em>\u201d from the committee late Tuesday night. <strong>Dino Fusco<\/strong>, Silverstein\u2019s COO, echoed similar feelings of disappointment that \u201c<em>West Side elected officials didn\u2019t see a path forward for The Avenir project<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With SL Green and Silverstein out, Soloviev Group\u2019s $11 billion-plus <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomplaza.nyc\">Freedom Plaza<\/a> near the United Nations remains the sole Manhattan contender. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in New York City, several other bids are competing, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/ballys-pushes-casino-bid-with-free-bus-announcement\">Bally\u2019s proposal in the Bronx<\/a>, Steve Cohen and Hard Rock International\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/new-york-mets-owner-steve-cohen-adds-8bn-to-community-investment-in-casino-proposal\">$8 billion plan near Citi Field<\/a> in Queens, Thor Equities\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/coney-island-ready-for-renewal-via-world-class-casino\">$3 billion Coney Island project<\/a>, Resorts World\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/resorts-world-announces-5-billion-expansion-proposal\">$5 billion expansion at Aqueduct<\/a>, and MGM\u2019s $2 billion-plus Empire City Casino proposal in Yonkers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summary: Community advisory committees voted against SL Green\u2019s Times Square casino and Silverstein\u2019s Javits-area project.
