On Wednesday, a community advisory panel will weigh in on a <strong>$5.4 billion plan to build a Caesars Entertainment casino and resort in Times Square<\/strong>. This proposal has divided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/states\/new-york\">New Yorkers<\/a> and sparked outrage across much of Broadway.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jay-zs-roc-nation-joined-the-project\">Jay-Z\u2019s Roc Nation Joined the Project<\/h2>\n<p>Supporters say the project would give the city\u2019s theater district a badly needed boost. Among them is rapper and entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/jay-z-and-roc-nation-show-interest-in-times-square-casino\"><strong>Jay-Z<\/strong>, who has partnered on the bid through his Roc Nation company<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Reverend Al Sharpton<\/strong>, whose group would run a $15 million civil rights museum funded by the casino developers, spoke about the rapper\u2019s involvement, calling it a milestone for representation. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Let us be real clear that with all of the stuff that&#8217;s gone out against this proposal, there is not one Black or Brown owner of a Broadway theater in 2025. So if this casino is established, it will be the first time we will have an institution on Broadway that has diversity at an ownership level.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Caesars and its partner, real estate giant SL Green, have lined up other powerful allies, including a construction workers&#8217; union.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eMaqcG7FVEM?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fierce-opposition\">Fierce Opposition  <\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/broadway-community-rallies-against-times-square-casino\"><strong>The Broadway League<\/strong>, along with several neighborhood groups<\/a>, believes a casino would pull money away from ticket sales and alter the character of the city\u2019s most famous entertainment hub. <\/p>\n<p>Tensions came to a head last week at a contentious public hearing when the League\u2019s president, <strong>Jason Laks<\/strong>, was met with cheers from union workers clad in red \u201c<em>Vote No<\/em>\u201d shirts as he warned of the dangers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We represent 100,000 New Yorkers who work in our industry<\/em>\u201d Laks explained, while also calling the plan an \u201c<em>existential<\/em>\u201d threat. The advisory committee will cast its vote on Wednesday morning. If approved, the project would change an office tower into a complex with close to 1,000 hotel rooms, several celebrity-chef restaurants, and a generous casino floor.<\/p>\n<p>Caesars has pledged $250 million in community benefits in the next 10 years, from Broadway ticket vouchers to tuition and health initiatives, plus $10 million to support historic Black theaters. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summary: Caesars and SL Green are pushing a $5.4 billion Times Square casino project backed by Jay-Z and supported by Rev.
