Adam Anderson<\/strong>, the bill\u2019s sponsor, ahead of the vote said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is not the legislature\u2019s responsibility to force a business to operate a line of business that may not be profitable<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the proposal has been met with fierce resistance from the state\u2019s horsemen\u2019s and breeders\u2019 associations, along with national racing organizations. <\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, opponents warn that its passage could mark the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gulfstreampark.com\">Gulfstream Park<\/a>, one of Florida\u2019s last two remaining Thoroughbred tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Gulfstream\u2019s parent company, <strong>1\/ST Racing and Gaming<\/strong>, has reassured stakeholders that, provided the bill passes, they will maintain live racing for at least three more years. <\/p>\n<p>However, the company has not made any long-term commitments and has hinted at redevelopment plans for the site.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"marion-countys-rep-this-bill-will-kill-this-county\">Marion County\u2019s Rep.: \u201cThis Bill Will Kill This County\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Marion County\u2019s Rep. <strong>Yvonne Hayes Hinson<\/strong>, citing economic impact reports commissioned by the Florida Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, strongly criticized the measure. \u201c<em>This bill will kill this county<\/em>\u201d, she stated.<\/p>\n<p>During public testimony, trainer <strong>Jena Antonucci<\/strong> made an emotional plea against decoupling, warning of the devastating impact on the local racing community. <\/p>\n<p>Hayes Hinson added<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This will lead to less farm owners, less community, and less enrichment. The racing is just a very small portion of what happens. Racing is what happens when everything goes right.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Located on prime real estate in Hallandale Beach, Gulfstream Park\u2019s casino operates under state laws that protect Florida\u2019s gambling compact with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/seminole-tribe-of-florida-to-debut-table-games-from-december-7\">Seminole Tribe<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If the legislation fails, 1\/ST Racing would <strong>still have the option to sell or redevelop the property<\/strong>, even if it means closing the underperforming casino.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Tobin Overdorf<\/strong>, who stands for districts located north of Miami, expressed support for the bill while acknowledging the Thoroughbred industry\u2019s contributions. <\/p>\n<p>However, he maintained that lawmakers should not obstruct business decisions. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As we go forward, we need to recognize something, Florida is about business.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The debate also revisited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/7073\/BillText\/er\/PDF\">HB 7073<\/a> passed last year that allocated $15 million in state funding for Gulfstream, along with tax credits and subsidies for the racing and breeding industries. <\/p>\n<p>While Hinson argued that these subsidies contradict efforts to pass decoupling, Overdorf insisted that the funding would remain intact regardless of the bill\u2019s outcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summary: A new bill could let Gulfstream Park run its casino without hosting live racing.
