About one-third of it is being funded by Virginia residents going into Maryland<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"the-decision-in-local-voters-hands\">The Decision, in Local Voters\u2019 Hands<\/h2>\n<p>If passed, Surovell\u2019s proposed legislation would allow the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to hold a referendum, putting the decision in the hands of local voters.<\/p>\n<p>Surovell clarified that while many opponents claim the bill would authorize a casino in the county, this is not true. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All the bill does is authorize a process by which the voters could eventually approve one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposed project wouldn\u2019t be limited to a casino, as it would also feature a large-scale entertainment complex hosting a hotel, concert venue, and convention center.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W7NIbIRbtMQ?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Critics have <strong>raised concerns about the potential for increased traffic congestion in Tysons<\/strong>, a region already notorious for severe traffic congestion. <\/p>\n<p>Surovell addressed this claim by emphasizing the proximity of the proposed site to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmata.com\/rider-guide\/stations\/tysons.cfm\">Metro\u2019s Silver Line<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The latter is a rapid transit line of the Washington Metro system that consists of 34 stations in Loudoun County, Fairfax County, and Arlington County Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Prince George&#8217;s County, Maryland. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Part of the reason the state chose to invest billions of dollars in extending the Silver Line out this way was to put exactly this kind of density and this kind of activity at this location<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Senate Majority Leader further added that the entire point of Metro is \u201c<em>to try and get people to these locations without using cars.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Virginia\u2019s 2025 legislative session was set to begin on Wednesday but the date suffered a delay until next week due to a series of water disruptions in Richmond caused by the weather.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summary: Virginia lawmakers Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell\u2019s proposal to build a casino in Fairfax County\u2019s Tysons area.
