{"id":3408,"date":"2024-12-05T11:11:45","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T11:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/?p=3408"},"modified":"2024-12-05T14:28:13","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T14:28:13","slug":"statehouse-bills-may-ban-smoking-in-kansas-and-missouri-casinos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/statehouse-bills-may-ban-smoking-in-kansas-and-missouri-casinos","title":{"rendered":"Statehouse Bills May Ban Smoking in Kansas and Missouri Casinos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/casino-employees-against-smoking-effects.jpg\" alt=\"Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE)\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3409\" width=\"300\" title=\"Statehouse Bills May Ban Smoking in Kansas and Missouri Casinos\" \/><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advocacy group CEASE is pushing for a smoking ban in state-run casinos across Kansas and Missouri.<\/li>\n<li>The potential ban could go into effect as early as 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Proposed legislation will be debated in the upcoming session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the bills aimed at banning smoking in casinos in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/states\/kansas\">Kansas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/states\/missouri\">Missouri<\/a> led by advocacy group <strong>Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects<\/strong> (CEASE) gain the traction they need, the two states could soon be looking at \u201c<em>No Smoking<\/em>\u201d signs popping up in state-operated venues. <\/p>\n<p>Namely, the <strong>smoking ban could be implemented as early as 2025<\/strong> provided the legislation proposed by lawmakers is given the green light during the upcoming session. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mixed-feelings\">Mixed Feelings <\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<em>85% of Kansans and Missourians do not smoke<\/em>\u201d said <strong>Joe Hafley<\/strong>, the Kansas and Missouri founder of CEASE. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have lots and lots of support [from] different groups\u2014American Heart, American Lung, Americans for Non-Smokers Rights.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also explained that smokers will not be left without options, giving the example of casinos like 7th Street Casino, owned by a Native American tribe, which would remain unaffected by the proposed ban.<\/p>\n<p>For some casino patrons, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/new-poll-shows-new-jersey-residents-ok-with-casino-smoking\">potential ban sparked mixed feelings<\/a>. \u201c<em>I probably wouldn\u2019t go as much because there\u2019s no kids around, and that was the whole reason for banning it in restaurants and stuff<\/em>\u201d said <strong>Melissa Dancer<\/strong>, a customer in Kansas City, Kansas. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is like the only place we can escape without kids. They should not ban smoking in casinos.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Others saw the move as a positive change. <strong>Mattie Coleman<\/strong>, a visitor at 7th Street Casino, said, <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I smoke myself and I\u2019m about to quit, so that would probably be a good deal. Everybody won\u2019t be breathing it, inhaling it, and [there\u2019d be] no secondhand smoke.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clifton Milton noted, \u201c<em>For each its own, I think that it\u2019s best to just keep it where it is.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"customers-can-vote-with-their-pocketbooks\">Customers \u201cCan Vote With Their Pocketbooks\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Jeff Morris<\/strong>, Vice President of Public Affairs &#038; Government Relations for Penn Entertainment, which operates Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas, and Argosy in Riverside, Missouri, highlighted the company\u2019s approach to balancing customer preferences. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We use state-of-the-art ventilation systems, extremely high ceilings, and adequate separation of smoking and non-smoking areas<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He emphasized that customer preferences play a significant role. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The real power at the end of the day on this issue rests with our customers who can vote with their pocketbooks<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Legislators in Missouri and Kansas will go back to their respective capitols in January. Hafley is already planning advocacy events in both states to push for the legislation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>It\u2019d be nice to not have to take a shower after the day, when I get off work, as soon as I get home<\/em>\u201d Hafley said, underscoring the fact that the smoke gets on their clothes and is carried inside homes where all family members then get exposed to it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summary: Advocacy group CEASE is pushing for a smoking ban in state-run casinos across Kansas and Missouri.
