{"id":1274,"date":"2020-02-13T13:17:26","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T13:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/?p=1274"},"modified":"2020-02-13T13:17:26","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T13:17:26","slug":"university-of-massachusetts-receives-millions-to-research-gambling-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/university-of-massachusetts-receives-millions-to-research-gambling-impact","title":{"rendered":"UMass Amherst Receives Millions to Research Gambling Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/university-of-massachusetts-amherst.jpg\" alt=\"University of Massachusetts Amherst\" title=\"UMass Amherst Receives Millions to Research Gambling Impact\" width=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1275\" \/>The <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> (MGC) has granted a contract worth $1 million annually to a research team from the <strong>University of Massachusetts Amherst<\/strong>, who plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/macohort\/\">study the impact of gambling in the state<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The grant will kick in for three consecutive years and comes on the heels of large commercial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/states\/massachusetts\">casinos opening in Massachusetts<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s contributions will be part of the MGC\u2019s larger gambling investigation, set to take place over 12 years. The team will be eligible for two renewals after the first three-year period is finished. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Volberg<\/strong> is the lead investigator for the UMass team, in addition to being a research professor and epidemiologist in the university\u2019s School of Public Health &amp; Health Sciences. She stated that the team\u2019s aim is to chart the impact of gambling on the state in the wake of legalization. Volberg stated that the team\u2019s research could be especially helpful in preventing problem gambling. <\/p>\n<p>The team has already completed the first phases of the project, which dealt with baseline conditions in Massachusetts, before the completion of <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casinousa.com\/news\/mgm-springfield-resort-to-finally-open-this-week\">MGM Springfield<\/a><\/strong> casinos. The earlier phases of the team\u2019s research received $3.64 million in funding.<\/p>\n<p>One of the team\u2019s previous findings came from data obtained from the <strong>Plainridge Park Casino<\/strong> in Plainville. Their research showed that the casino\u2019s presence did not result in increased problem gambling rates but instead increased jobs and other economic advantages in the area. However, the research did show increased personal spending in casinos. The team noted that their findings may be biased by Plainville\u2019s proximity to casinos in Connecticut and Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"social-and-economic-impact-of-gambling\">Social and Economic Impact of Gambling<\/h2>\n<p>The new phases of the study will go deeper into the social and economic impact of the casinos in the state.  The team will collect data from adults in Massachusetts regarding their gambling habits. The focus will mostly be on the different types of gambling activities they have participated in the last 12 months, the amount of money they spent, how often they gambled, as well as if they have experienced struggles with substance abuse or mental health illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>The funds allocated to the team\u2019s study are set to be earmarked for the team members\u2019 salaries and fringe, travel costs, supplies, and subcontracts. The team will be comprised of six members of the UMass faculty and staff, and one graduate research assistant.
